Architectural Technologist (MCIAT)

NO AGENCIES!
Location: Taunton, Somerset - Hestercombe House
Terms: Full Time
Role Type: Fee Earner (Supporting our Design Team)
Salary: Highly Competetive...
Pension: Auto-Enrolment '8%' Workplace Pension - incs. 3% employer's contribution
Start: ASAP

We are seeking to rapidly fill new design roles who will join our team to assist with a range of substantial projects for a variety of rural clients across the South & South West.

A significant portion of our day-to-day delivery is in the production of first-class design packages to deliver fantastic results across a broad variety of scenarios. Indeed we are regularly complimented on the clarity and quality of our work - by both customers and local authorities!

We now need additional team members to take on and assist with new projects, existing workload and to work alongside our colleagues in the delivery of quality planning applications through building stages to final on-site completion...

If you are looking for new challenges, are feeling stifled by your current employer or desire a move to broaden your horizons - and if you want to take on new design responsibility and to be a part of a dynamic, inclusive team - then, perhaps, look no further...

Required
Suitable candidates will have either:
RIBA Part 2 Accreditation
or
Full Membership of CIAT (MCIAT)
Note: we would not rule out applications from experienced but lesser qualified applicants!

Essential
Note this role is only open to current UK residents and requires direct experience of working within the England / Wales planning and building control regime.  Do not read further if you do not meet these requirements!

Required
  • Minimum 2 years work experience (in practice - predominantly in residential projects)
  • Full working knowledge of the UK building regulations
  • A thorough understanding and experience of the Town & Country Planning process
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD (and ideally SketchUp Pro)*

*We're serious about this... saying you're an 'expert' simply because you opened the software once - and thought it looked easy to use - will not cut the mustard!

You will likely live in our area and - or at least have strong West-country roots and are looking to return. Knowledge of the local geography and the ability to attend regular team meetings / collaborative design sessions will be required so remote working is not likely to be viable although we will of course consider options.

You will need have experience of working within a small multi-disciplinary team - handling several concurrent projects, particularly in the fields of:
  • Traditional barn / heritage building conversions
  • Bespoke / one-off housing projects
  • Renovation / redevelopment of dilapidated buildings
  • New commercial / agricultural projects
  • Small scale mixed development proposal

You will be able to draw quickly and competently to communicate design ideas at client meetings with a pen / pencil... as well as on screen!

This role requires a full (preferably clean!) driving licence - and the use of a car... You will be expected to undertake site work / surveys etc - and this may result in occasional stays away...

Desirable attributes
  • Great interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrable ability in design
  • Ability to undertake measured surveys to a high standard
  • Experience and understanding of Permitted Development Legislation
  • Confidence and willingness to take a lead in design
  • Experience in a building trade / property renovation
  • Proven ability and interest in additional architecture software such as AutoDesk Revit, Twinmotion, and / or other architectural rendering tools
  • Interest in VR and augmented reality is also highly compatible with our aspirations... Likewise with 3D printing / prototyping...
  • Ability in traditional model making would also be useful...
  • Also, if you have knowledge of photogrammetry and understand the differences between a Mavic Pro and an Inspire - we're likely to get on (!)
Proficiency in other software (to at-least a competent level - if not a power user) is desirable such as:
  • Office 365 (Word / Outlook / Excel / Powerpoint particularly)
  • Corel Draw Suite 2021
  • Affinity Designer (etc)
  • Photoshop / Adobe Creative Suite

Most importantly the right person will align with our values

Location
The role will be centred on projects based predominantly around the West Country (Cornwall, Devon, Dorset & Somerset) although there may be an opportunity to travel further on occasion.

While there may be scope for occasional home working, this team centric position will be a full-time role - based at our office at Hestercombe House, Taunton. You will therefore be office-based - but there may be ongoing flexibility to work from home subject to line management discretion.

Due to location and the requirements of the role, your own transport is essential.

Finally

To apply for this role please provide a covering letter providing a brief summary of your recent work together with your CV.

Bondstones is a regulated firm of Chartered Surveyors - specialising in Change of Use, Architectural Design and "Town & Country Planning" matters (with a core emphasis on "country"!).  Our head-office is conveniently located in the heart of the West-Country and we typically work in the geographical areas between Lands End and London.  However, on occasion, we also work farther afield...

This means that we will only undertake work which is directly within our field(s) of expertise and that we are also fully insured (both Professional Indemnity and Public / Employers Liability).

Our team are passionate about architecture and the countryside, its' sustainable future and re-use of rural buildings:  We offer our professional expertise to satisfy a range of rural property issues, including (but not limited to) Planning Consultancy and Architectural Design / Architecture.  Our primary interest is in the delivery of sustainable projects - and particularly the 'change of use' / modification of buildings & land.

Despite our cutting edge offer and market leading output, our services are available to all of our customers at surprisingly low rates - especially compared to our competitors.  OK, its true to say you will always find someone cheaper... but isn't that always the way!

Our philosophy is to provide objective advice from the outset - indeed may of our new clients are amazed at the level of advice that we offer at first contact... Our overriding mission is to provide valuable advice and exceptional design - which should delight our clients at every opportunity

We generally undertake work for:
  • Farmers & Farm Businesses
  • Rural Estates / Estate Managers
  • Equestrian Properties & Businesses
  • Home / Property Owners*
  • Tourism Entrepreneurs
  • Countryside Attractions & Recreation Sites

* Please note that 'small' extensions are not really our cup of tea... However if necessary we would be happy to refer you to a suitable 3rd party specialist.

That said, large, unique extensions and complete 'one off' domestic overhauls really do float our boat... so please get in touch!
