Apprentice Architectural Technician / Surveyor

Location: Taunton, Somerset - Hestercombe House
Terms: Apprenticeship
Role Type: Support / Student / Probationer
Salary / Terms: Fixed 12 month term with a 6 month probationary period at Apprentice NMW.
Following probation, progress & remuneration shall be re-evaluated accordingly.

Pension: N/A
Start: Starting early 2021 - Subject to COVID restrictions

Background:
Having achieved excellent results with a previous apprentice - Bondstones are now considering opening an opportunity for a new junior team member.  The ideal candidate will be keen to explore a career as a CAD Technician / Draughtsman / Surveyor and will, over time, grow to become an integral part of our expanding team - based in Taunton, Somerset.

It is intended that the role will offer the opportunity to progress with Bondstones as the candidates' experience grows.

The candidate:
You will be keen to learn and will do so by actively supporting the delivery of projects and participation in of all forms of feasibility, planning and construction drawings - all the while under professional supervision from your line Manager and colleague Surveyors.

You'll work in collaboration with other designers, acquire knowledge and practical skills through on-the-job learning to attain a professional qualification (eventually attaining 'AssocRICS' or equivalent), developing your industry knowledge through affiliations and continuing professional development.  Long term, there will also be the opportunity to become a fully qualified Chartered Member of RICS.

The opportunity:
The role will include a wide variety of site survey work, office based computer modelling & drafting, customer & contractor meetings and web-based & off-site training - as necessary.  Additional responsibilities and job roles will be developed to suit the candidate.

The vacancy will suit either a recent school leaver (probably following A-levels) or possibly someone already enrolled on a college / university course who is now wanting to move away from full-time education to a more hands on learning approach.

Perhaps you just don't want the frightening costs of a conventional Degree to loom over you for years after graduation...

If you wish to obtain a degree and more advanced qualifications in the future, this will also be possible through continued on the job learning.

Essential requirements:
  • Min 8 GCSE's including Maths, Science & English (Grades 4 or above; Grades A-C equivalent)
  • A strong desire to gain experience and formal qualifications within the surveying / architecture profession
  • You will possess excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • You must be very well organized, proactive and a real self-starter
  • Ability to work as part of a team and to work to deadlines
  • Good IT aptitude and a desire to work with computers - experience of Office 365 will be beneficial
  • A strong, self-motivated, work ethic is also a prerequisite

Desirable: (but not necessarily essential):
  • 3 'A-levels' or equivalent (preferably including one or more of: Design & Technology, Physics, Maths, Geography, Art & Design)
  • A family background in / understanding of agriculture - or - a clear connection with the building and construction industry
  • would be highly advantageous
  • Driving licence and access to a car (at the very least you will be keen to learn)
  • An obvious natural talent for Presentation / Layout and Design
  • A passion for IT, Computer Graphics, design, 'making' and gaming
  • Experience with SketchUp and / or AutoCAD - or similar design software
  • A good understanding of / affinity for architecture and building design principles
  • You should be an active outdoorsy type person...
  • Duke of Edinburgh’s Award (Silver or Above) and / or Queen's Scout Award or similar

It should be noted that we are seeking an individual with long term prospects within our growing business.  Accordingly, rates of pay will be reviewed and aligned with ability and, following a period of probation, full time employment is anticipated.

We are not seeking a wanderer or someone simply 'looking for a job’.  You will therefore be determined to start a career in the Architectural field and will have considered other options aside from an apprenticeship.

Individuals who have started an apprenticeship in a similar role elsewhere or wish to re-train from other trades / professions will also be considered.

Interviews for shortlisted Candidates will include a test of aptitude and are likely to involve a 1-to-1 assessment / work experience placement within the team.

Application Closing Date:  Open

Regulated by THe Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors

Bondstones is a regulated firm of Chartered Surveyors - specialising in "Town & Country Planning" (emphasis on "country"!) and Architectural Design.  Our head-office is based in the West-Country and we typically work in the geographical area between Lands End and London.  However, on occasion, we also work further afield...

We are extremely proud to be 'Regulated by the RICS' - this means we are a professionally qualified and regulated practice - bound by a code of conduct, strict rules and regulations. This means that we will only undertake work which is directly within our field(s) of expertise and that we are also fully insured (both Professional Indemnity and Public / Employers Liability).

Our team are passionate about architecture and the countryside, its' sustainable future and re-use of rural buildings:  We offer our professional expertise to satisfy a range of rural property issues, including (but not limited to) Planning Consultancy and Architectural Design / Architecture.  Our primary interest is in the delivery of sustainable projects - and particularly the 'change of use' of buildings & land.

Despite our cutting edge offer and market leading output quality, our services are available to all of our customers at surprisingly low rates - especially compared to our competitors.  OK, its true to say you will always find someone cheaper... but isn't that always the way!

Our philosophy is to provide objective advice from the outset - indeed may of our new clients are amazed at the level of advice that we offer at first contact... Our overriding mission is to "quote high and bill low - providing valuable advice and exceptional design - which should delight our clients at every opportunity"

We generally undertake work for:
  • Farmers & Farm Businesses
  • Rural Estates / Estate Managers
  • Equestrian Properties & Businesses
  • Home / Property Owners*
  • Tourism Entrepreneurs
  • Countryside Attractions & Recreation Sites

* Please note that 'small' extensions are not really our cup of tea... However if necessary we would be happy to refer you to a suitable 3rd party specialist.

That said, large, unique extensions and complete 'one off' domestic overhauls really do float our boat... so please get in touch!
